Mary Shelley Essay They make him stand out from the crowd and you instantly see a monster. Not a human. A monster that is evil. There is a contrast here between beauty and horror. Mary Shelley describes his teeth of pearly whiteness and his hair of lustrous black and flowing. This makes him seem beautiful. She then goes on to explain his more horrid features with his watery eyes set in dun-white sockets and his shrivelled complexion. This makes him seem like a monster. The monster is partly born evil because his creator abandons him and leaves him to figure life out by himself. The first thing the monster learns when he escapes the flat is evil and therefore he sees it as a way of life. Frankenstein leaves the flat in a hurry to escape his creation. He abandons the monster. This upsets the monster and thus shows us that even the monster can have a soul and feelings. Upset by this he decides to leave the flat and that is when he discovers all about real life, it is not his fault that he is evil. Frankensteins state of mind influences this because he is very stressed, as he has had no sleep and therefore gets angry, scared and emotional quite quickly and easily. If this is what the monster first sees then clearly he will act in the same way. Mary Shelley makes a lot of literary references in chapter 5. She bases the whole novel on Prometheus. It is known as a modern Prometheus. It was a huge part of Mary Shelleys inspiration. This myth underpins the whole novel. In the myth, Prometheus steals fire and is therefore punished for all eternity. This also goes for Coleridges Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The fact that if you go against something so strongly believed in then there will be an eternal punishment. That fact the if you do something against the law in this case, the law of nature there will always be consequences. Coleridges Rime of the Ancient Mariner is in the text because it illustrates exactly what Mary Shelley is talking about in the paragraph. It emphasises the fact that Frankenstein has gone against the laws of nature. Frightful Fiend not only shows us that Frankenstein has built an ugly monster but it is the concept that is frightening not the monster. That fact that once one person does something no matter how evil there will always be consequences and no turning back. Once one person has done something, the door is always open to other people doing the same. In this case, as soon as Frankenstein had created the monster there were more opportunities for, not only making humans out of body parts but for science and experiments and discoveries. She also refers to Dante. It became a thing such as even Dante could not have conceived. Dante was famous for his depictions of hell. What she is saying is here is that the monster that Victor had created looked pure evil and it was something that no other man on this earth could have created. This chapter prepares us for what happens later because abandoning the monster has led it to be evil. Frankenstein is constantly avoiding it trying not to think about it or find it. This makes the monster angry and upset. It will want revenge and because it is evil we expect to see bad things happen such as deaths. The result of Frankensteins irresponsible running away is that he has left the monster to work out what life is all about by himself. He was not born evil, he just realised that the first thing he saw in the world was fighting and killing and shouting. Frankenstein dreamt that his monster would be a success. The beauty of the dream vanished. After he had created the monster he endures the horror of it. He suddenly realised that he had committed nearly two days creating something so horrible that he almost knows that no good will come of it. Unable to take in the aspect of the monster he rushed to his room and tries to sleep. He does and he dreams that he kills Elizabeth by kissing her. As I imprinted the first kiss on her lips, they became livid with the hue of death. His dream foresees what will happen in the future. It tells Frankenstein that Elizabeth will die. Could it be his fault for Elizabeths death? In the dream, he kills Elizabeth but further on in the story the monster does. However, Frankenstein created the monster so is it his fault that Elizabeth dies? Frankenstein is based on new scientific discovery of the time, such as electricity. It relates to the many experiments being conducted at the time. Even in the 21st century there is still controversy over discoveries in science. There are debates in the news over abortions, genetically modified babies/food, the effects of global warming. Frankenstein relates to developments in science today because no matter when or where discoveries are being made, there will always be debates and arguments over the use of science and how it can effect us when used in such ways that the results are worse. Assessment of the Current Economy The Japanese economy has begun to show some signs of change as the effects of recent large-scale economic packages have gradually helped to stop the severe economic downturn. But despite this progress, private demand as a whole remains stagnant. Therefore, the economic prospects for self-supported recovery are still uncertain once the economic effects of the last packages have phased out. The fundamental problems pertinent to the weak economy are twofold. First, the true adjustment of the burst of the bubble economy is still insufficient. Second, against the background of the sharp decline in the number of births and the rapid aging of the population, the pace of which has not been experienced in other industrialized nations, the "Japanese system"--the engine of the country's astonishing high growth in the postwar era--has turned problematic with regard to economic growth. First, fears about employment prospects, future pension plans, and the sharp rise in government deficits are obviously restraining an economic turnaround. These fears are attributable to eroding sustainability in the Japanese-style wage and employment systems and the generous social security system. To cope with the situation, provisions of renewed safety nets are urgently needed. Furthermore, the rising fiscal deficits are restraining economic upturn by making people serious about future tax hikes and raising long-term interest rates. Measures to restore government fiscal balances in the medium and long term are also required. Second, the Japanese social system, which has looked highly on across-the-board equality, has generated a bloated public sector and inefficient resource allocation. Typical examples are excessive regulation, overprotection, lack of self-reliance, and the "convoy" system. To cope with these problems, a new system needs to be built in which all production factors such as capital, labor, and land should be best allocated in a more efficient way through fundamental reforms in the public sector and full utilization of the market mechanism. Third, a Japanese management style that depends on unrealized capital gains has become obsolete by international standards, and has made the new challenge difficult. The Japanese financial system of indirect financial intermediation, which is based on land as collateral, has been malfunctioning. A new business management as well as a new financial system that will fit the Japanese economy in the 21st century need to be established early, so that the abundant savings of Japan are best mobilized for economic development in the next century.

In a diverse society where each individual may have lots of different characteristics and qualities, there are many opportunities for people to label and stereotype others. When this happens, it can create an environment where prejudice and discrimination may be found. A prejudice is an unfair or unreasonable preconceived view or judgement that is formed without being based on any specific grounds or sufficient knowledge.Discrimination means treating a person or group differently, often in a negative manner, based upon one or a small number of characteristics. Stereotypes can sometimes be positive – however, this is not the case when it comes to prejudice. With prejudice, the views held about certain groups of people are negative, they are applied to an entire group and they tend to be strongly held. So, the group (with possibly a different gender / race / ethnic origin / sexual orientation or with a disability) will be described in negative ways.They will be called things such as ‘lazy’, ‘stupid’, ‘weak’, ‘dangerous’ and ‘untrustworthy’. In communities and societies where prejudice and discrimination are found, people will have fewer life chances and a poorer quality of life. Given that prejudices can be so damaging, it is worth looking at how people develop them. How people may develop prejudices There are many ways that people may develop prejudices. Two of the most common are: 1. Socialisation The most likely way that people will develop prejudices is to learn them from other people, such as family and friends.An individual will experience the views of these people on a daily basis, and there will also be the influences of the media and the views of high profile people. If a young person with no alternative points of reference is exposed to prejudices that are stated as facts, then he / she may accept them without any questions. If a particular prejudice is regularly presented, then it is difficult for people to question the viewpoint and challenge the prejudice. 2. Over generalisationA second way prejudices may develop occurs when a person has a powerful experience and then generalises it to a particular group. This is usually caused by a very strong negative experience. It may well be very sensible to dislike or distrust the particular experience, but the over generalisation is not always accurate. Different types of discrimination People can describe themselves or others in terms of one or more characteristics. At times, it is possible that a person will be treated in a negative way because of a characteristic or quality that they possess.This negative treatment is often referred to as discrimination. There are a few key terms that are used when talking about discrimination. These are: †¢ Direct and indirect discrimination †¢ Dual discrimination and multiple discrimination †¢ Positive discrimination †¢ Discrimination arising from disability †¢ Discrimination by association †¢ Protected characteristics. The effects that discrimination and prejudice can have on people When people are subject to discrimination they often end up with a quality of life far lower than they would reasonably expect.Historically, discrimination and prejudice has sometimes been a matter of life and death in some countries and cultures. Some of the effects of prejudice and discrimination include: †¢ People being killed because of their race, nationality, religion or sexual orientation. †¢ People being denied the right to vote. †¢ People being subjected to physical attacks and verbal abuse. †¢ People being deprived of legal rights. †¢ People being denied education, jobs and opportunities. †¢ People being generally treated as outsiders and second class citizens . †¢ People accepting the negative views of themselves. Communities and whole societies having greater conflict and being less efficient and harmonious. †¢ Communities and societies built on hatred and contempt. When people are classified (stereotyped) on the basis of one or two characteristics, they are stripped of many of their qualities. A stereotype reduces them to a one dimensional character. All the other things that make a person special and human will be ignored by the prejudiced people. This makes it easier to inflict pain and suffering on innocent parties. This is why prejudice and discrimination are so dangerous.

The American Revolution marked the beginning of a new era for the colonies. The newly established states were met with a set of unique challenges. One of the challenges Georgia encountered was settling an international land dispute with Spain. In 1783, the Treaty of Paris formally ended the Revolutionary War and Spain was given back their Florida territory. However, Spain had also asserted ownership of land east of the Mississippi and North of the Yazoo River which Georgia had also claimed. Georgia was left to settle this international land dispute on their own. Georgia’ solution to this land dispute was to settle the Yazoo Lands. Georgia legislatures needed to ensure that they could quickly settle these lands and began taking offers from land speculators. However, the process by which these land speculating companies would acquire these lands would ultimately have a significant impact on the state of Georgia. The Yazoo Land Sale Scandal had many effects, yet one of the most s ignificant events to indirectly come from this scandal would be the Trail of Tears (NGE: Yazoo Land Fraud). The most important themes and trends in Georgia’s history from the end of the American Revolution through the late 1830s are symbolized by the Yazoo Sale, its origin, and its aftermath.
